Francesco Molinari reflects on ‘massive’ win at Wentworth
Francesco Molinari has clarified his BMW PGA Championship win every year as”enormous” because of his optimism and a important factor that caused his unforgettable Open victory at Carnoustie.
Molinari made an outstanding show of front-running last May, to maintain off playing-partner Rory McIlroy in Wentworth, and his victory sparked a run of results which comprised his maiden significant title less than two months later, where he upstaged McIlroy and Tiger Woods.
The Italian recorded a five wins out of five in the Ryder Cup, however he has had a more bizarre 2019 and picked up his only silverware in the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March.
However he is currently looking forward to defending his BMW PGA name in the September playing of the tournament and stays in the world’s top 10.
Reflecting on his triumph May, Molinari explained:”It was enormous because I was in a comparable position to last year without having the ability to shut the tournament out. It only gave me a great deal of confidence.
“I was watching a video of the past couple of holes Sunday, and you might see that I was uneasy in that position. I think that was the first step to getting more comfortable in directing a tournament and closing it out.
“I think if you examine it to Carnoustie, it is rather simple to see the difference. I am quite happy how if I get in that place again this year it moved and yeah I’ll hit a shot that is third that is greater !
“The win in the States (Quicken Loans National) clearly helped more moving into The Open, which gave me even more confidence then moving in the Ryder Cup. I am sure when I stop playing, I’ll reflect on this past year as an season, but notably those 3 weeks May, June, July have been.
“Obviously I will work as hard as I will do it, but I know I’ve set a fairly significant standard,” added Molinari, who looked on course to amass a second key title at the Masters in April, just to find water two on the back nine on Sunday as Woods stormed into his first significant success in nearly 11 years.
“I had a excellent start of the year and after that, following the Experts, obviously I have not done as well,” said Molinari, that has not posted a top-10 end in his eight starts since his Augusta National disappointment.
“I believe there’s been perhaps some scheduling problems. Adequate golf and I’ve played apart from the PGA, at the other majors. I’m not happy how I played with at another tournaments, although I’m happy the way I played with in The Open and the US Open.
“It is difficult to pinpoint 1 reason as to why. I’ve talked to the folks around me and we’re attempting to work out how best to proceed, and also to play golf.”
